Clinton Testifies...
And Clouds the Presidency
| President Bill Clinton testified before the Grand
Jury today and then addressed the American people. In a globally televised
speech, Clinton acknowledged that he had an "improper relationship" with
Monica Lewinsky, something both he and Lewinsky denied under oath in the
Paula Jones case.
His viewpoint, as narrow as it seems, is that because the Paula Jones case was thrown out of court, it really doesn't matter. According to Clinton, it is nobody's business but his and his family's and it is now time to get on with the business of running this country. From a less self-centered perspective, many feel this country comes first and question if a man who has just admitted to perjury, wasted millions of dollars and thousands upon thousands of hours of manpower deserves anything more than a bus out of Washington. This country deserves a leader who can focus on the problems of today, not one who is fighting skeletons - and lawsuits - from the past. The real heart of the perjury matter is that the Jones trial was about a Governor soliciting oral from a woman which was eventually thrown out of court. Truthful testimony from Clinton and Lewinsky, an unpaid White House Intern who did have sex with Clinton, and whose career did advance to a paying position could have been devastating evidence in the Jones trial. Jones has appealed her case and the ramifications of Clinton's testimony could shed a whole new light on that case. Tune in tomorrow folks. The fat lady hasn't sung on this one yet. |

Paula Corbin Jones kept quiet for more than two years about what she says happened on May 8, 1991. She was afraid, she said, that nobody would believe her story -- which was, essentially, that Bill Clinton, who was then governor of Arkansas, noticed her at a desk in the lobby of the Excelsior Hotel in Little Rock, where she was handing out name tags for a conference, had a state trooper bring her to a private room, and there made a crude request for oral sex, in the process giving her a look at what she would later call the "distinguishing characteristics" of his genital area. |
